Cost effective and easy accessibility are the essential ingredients of Mobile Mammography and health screening. Concept of X-ray to visualize breast tissue was first put forward by Dr. Albert Salomon. A German surgeon in 1913 and in 1950’s Jacob Gershan began to advocate widespread use of the X-rays for screening purpose. In recent years, new technological trends, notably 3-D breast imaging, and breast tomosynthesis were approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2011. Mobile Health units are increasingly utilized to address barriers to mammography screening. Substantial population of underserved women had either never been screened or had not had a screening in 5 years. Women with the lack of insurance and current smoking habits had abnormal screens requiring follow up. An efficient mobile breast center is completely self- contained and only requires space in a parking lot and is capable of performing screening and diagnostic 3-D mammograms and breast ultrasound exams.

Woman who could benefit from mammography is not receiving it, specifically women who have poor access to routine healthcare because they are socioeconomically disadvantaged, reside in poorly served inner city or remote areas or lack health insurance. Mobile mammography is one way to provide better access.

It is important to understand why women are not receiving mammography? Some factors are economic, social, physical, cultural, physiological and organizational influences. Vulnerable populations in the underserved areas are even more adversely effected by these factors.

Poor health care access, not knowing where to obtain a mammogram, transportation problems, poor geographic access, inconvenience, and long waits are also barriers to mammography screening.

Mobile mammography is economical compared to fixed facilities. Mobile facilities can provide access to mammography for women in underserved regions at convenient locations. The mobile mammography programs have made screening more accessible by visiting work sites, health clinics, health fairs, churches, synagogues, retirement communities and even city streets. Women receiving both mammography education and mobile mammographic access will get the maximum benefit and diagnosed early allowing lifesaving follow up as necessary. Rural women who had to travel farther were less likely to participate in screening. Proximity to the mammography Van plays a positive role with enhanced participation in mammography resulting in a positive impact on breast cancer detection.
